Finding the clams for the restaurant tables is back breaking work

The cost of living in Portugal is among the lowest in Europe.

Many people in Portugal still make their living from the land or sea like this clam picker seen working the bed of the Gilao river in Tavira.

It looks idyllic but it is backbreaking work and the financial rewards are small.
