A view of the salt marshes in the Ria Formosa national park.

Stretching along the coast of the eastern Algarve the Ria Formosa national park is a haven for birds and wildlife.

There are mile upon mile of sand dunes and salt marshes interspersed with channels like the one above.

Be careful when exploring though as the tides come in very rapidly and it is easy to get cut off if you have no boat.
